Wilkes County (North Carolina)

Wilkes County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wilkesboro.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern North Carolina, is in the north about 30 miles from Virginia, the west about 35 miles from Tennessee and has an area of 1968 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Surry County, Yadkin County, Iredell County, Alexander County, Caldwell County, Watauga County, Ashe County and Alleghany County.

History

Wilkes County was formed in 1777 from parts of Surry County. It was named, as well as the district capital Wilkesboro, according to John Wilkes, a British journalist and radical politician.
