Willem Buys

Willem Buys ( born May 27, 1661 Amsterdam ();? † February 18, 1749 ) was a Dutch politician of the 18th century.

Biographical

Willem Buys studied at the Universities of Leiden and Orléans, and was hired as a lawyer at the Dutch Court " Hof van Holland" in 1684. In 1691 he was " magistrates of Amsterdam ".

In 1704 he acted as an intermediary between the Dutch States of Friesland and Groningen and the counterparty to the Outfit of Holland and Zeeland. Reason for his intervention was the dispute of those States on the establishment of Johann Wilhelm Friso of Nassau- Dietz as governor of the Republic of the United Netherlands.

Willem Buys worked abroad as an official ambassador of the Netherlands, in this case he was able to improve diplomatic relations with Britain. As a Dutch representative, he also took part in the peace negotiations with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Buys also had good contacts with the Whigs, and therefore got the job the political activities of the British Queen Anne Stuart monitor.

In 1714 he was sent together with Sicco van Goslinga as Dutch ambassador to France. Here it promoted his good knowledge of the French language. Buys concluded with Spain, as well as an agreement on free trade and shipping. In 1723 he was sent as an envoy to the Danish court.

As the ailing Grand Pensionary Anthonie van stayed in the home spa treatment, Buys led in the years into office in Holland.
