Willem Piso

Willem Piso (* 1611 in Amsterdam, † 1678 in Leiden; Latinized for Wilhelm Pies ) was a Dutch doctor. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Piso ".

Life

Piso participated at the age of 26 years as a personal physician to the eight-year expedition of Count John Maurice of Nassau- Siegen to Brazil ( 1637-1644 ). Count Johann Moritz had decided, in the framework of its mission for the Dutch West India Company, which recently manage conquered colony in northeastern Brazil, several artists and scientists include in his company for documentation and recording of information, such as geography, landscapes, land development, disease, medicinal plants etc. these included alongside Willem Piso the painter Albert Eckhout, the painter Frans Post, the painter and architect Pieter Post and cartographer, botanist and astronomer Georg Marggraf, who had initially worked as a botanical assistant Zab. Piso and Marggraf co-authored the script for Brazilian Natural History Naturalis Historia Brasiliae of 1648th

Willem Piso is considered one of the founders of modern tropical medicine. His comments are the first detailed reports on the most common diseases, toxic effects and medicinal plants in Brazil. Even today some of these plants use in medicine, the Ipecacuanhawurzel and JABORANDI leaves.

Ehrentaxa

Charles Plumier named in his honor the genus Pisonia the plant family of magic flowers plants ( Nyctaginaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name. In addition, the plant genus Pisoniella and the animal genus Pison, as well as numerous animal and plant species have been named after Willem Piso. The epithets are: Pisonis, pisoniae, Pisonia, pisonioides, pisonifolia, neopisoniae and pisonopsis.
