Willem van Aelst

Willem van Aelst ( born May 16, 1627 Utrecht or Delft, † after 1683 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch still life painter.

Life

Willem van Aelst was the pupil of his uncle Evert van Aelst. On November 9, 1643 he was admitted to the Delft Guild of St. Luke. From 1645 to 1649 he lived in France and then in Italy until 1656. There he worked among others for the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand II de Medici. In Italy, he worked closely with Otto van Marseus Schrieck who has insects probably often painted on his paintings. From 1657 he was in Amsterdam, where he probably worked until his death. Among his pupils included Isaac Denies, Serious Stuven, Rachel Ruysch, Geertje Pieters (1636-1712) and especially Maria van Oosterwijk ( 1630-1693 ).

Willem van Aelst was an important painter of flowers, fruits and hunting still life. He was a brilliant colorist and reached a high level of mastery in the reproduction of materials, metals and bird feathers.
