Willem van der Haegen

Wilhelm van der Haegen, Portuguese also Guilherme da Silveira, was a noble merchant of Flanders at the end of the 15th century.

Wilhelm van der Haegen was in 1470 the first settler on the Azores island of Flores, but he left after a few years due to lack of connections to European trade routes. He then sat down on São Jorge, where he founded in 1480 with the village of Topo the first permanent settlement on the island.
