Willi Apel

Willi Apel ( born October 10, 1893 in Konitz (now Chojnice ); † March 14, 1988 in Bloomington, Indiana, United States) was a born in Germany American musicologist.

Life

Willi Apel was one of the most influential personalities in the field of musicology of the 20th century. He studied piano and musicology in Berlin and in 1936 received his doctorate with a thesis on " Accidentien and tonality in the music monuments of the 15th and 16th century." In the same year emigrated Apel in the U.S.. Here he taught from 1936 to 1943 at the " Longy School of Music " in Cambridge (Massachusetts ). From 1938 to 1942 he was a professor at Harvard University and Radcliffe College, from 1950 to 1970, he taught musicology at Indiana University. Emeritus since 1963, he died in 1988.

After his death his widow Ursula Apel - Siemering founded in his memory, a foundation to promote student age music at the " School of Music " Indiana University.
