William A. McKeighan

William Arthur McKeighan ( born January 19, 1842 in Millville, New Jersey; † 15 December 1895 in Hastings, Nebraska ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the second and 1893-1895 the fifth electoral district of the state of Nebraska in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1848, William McKeighan moved with his parents in the Fulton County, Illinois, where he attended the public schools. During the Civil War he served in a volunteer regiment from Illinois.

After the war, McKeighan settled on a farm near Pontiac, which he managed. In 1880 he moved to the vicinity of Red Cloud, Nebraska, where he was also engaged in farming. At that time he organized the so-called Farmers' Alliance, a political group, which then went up in the short-lived Populist Party. Between 1885 and 1887 McKeighan judge was in a probate court in Webster County.

In 1888, William McKeighan applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1890 he was elected as a candidate of the Populists as a deputy in Congress. There he was able to complete a parliamentary term after re-election in 1892 between 4 March 1891, the first of March 3, 1893. Since he was also elected in 1892 in the newly created fifth district in the House of Representatives, he could also remain for the next legislative period to March 3, 1895 Congress. But in subsequent elections he was defeated by Republican David Henry Mercer.

After the end of his time in Congress be McKeighan withdrew from politics. He died only nine months after the end of his last term on 15 December 1895 and was buried at the cemetery in Red Cloud.
