William A. Russell

William Augustus Russell ( born April 22, 1831 in Wells River, Vermont, † January 10, 1899 in Boston, Massachusetts ) was an American politician. Between 1879 and 1885 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Russell received an academic education in Franklin ( New Hampshire) and was later active in Exeter in papermaking. In 1852 he moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts, where he worked in the same industry. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In 1869 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. In the years 1868 and 1876 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant, on which Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes were later nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the congressional elections of 1878 Russell was in the seventh election district of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Benjamin Franklin Butler on March 4, 1879. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1885 three legislative periods. Since 1883, he acted as the successor of John W. Candler eighth district of his state. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Russell operated again as a paper manufacturer. He died on January 10, 1899 in Boston.
