William Alcott

William Andrus Alcott ( born August 6 1798 in Wolcott, † March 29, 1859 in Auburndale ) was an American physician, health reformer and author.

Alcott was life demand as a speaker and as an author of various advisory and decency literature. From 1839 - after a life-long aversion to meat and fish - were Alcott any animal-derived products on consumption. Alcott was his life convinced that a vegetarian diet brings health benefits and also that a vegetarian culture could enrich society generally morally, because on the one hand, the violence towards other animals would be terminated and the people practiced the other hand to control their " lower impulses ".

William Alcott worked a lot together with his cousin Bronson Alcott. Bronson founded about the community, " Fruitlands " in Massachusetts there and tried many of the concepts of life by William of. Both cultivated an extensive correspondence and discussed each other's publications.

William Alcott himself took no active part in building the community and held instead nationwide lectures for the early vegetarian movement. At the founding meeting of the Vegetarian Society in 1850, which was convened on the pulse of William Metcalfe and Sylvester Graham, Alcott was elected its president. The contents of the company revolved around the " superiority of the vegetarian lifestyle " and argued mainly with views on positive health effects of a vegetarian diet. The meeting was one for successfully and you soon circulated publication in circles of vegetarians and reformers. Alcott was living in Auburndale. Alcott died in 1859 at the age of 60 from tuberculosis, which he suffered since childhood. His body lies in the Newton Cemetery.
