William Alfred Buckingham

William Alfred Buckingham ( born May 28, 1804 in Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut; † February 2nd 1875 in Norwich, Connecticut ) was an American politician of the Republican Party.

After attending public school and a private school in Colchester Buckingham was working as a merchant, as well as in the production industry. From 1849 to 1850 and again from 1856 to 1857 he was mayor of the city of Norwich. 1858 Buckingham was elected with 52 percent of the vote to Democrat James T. Pratt for Governor of Connecticut, where he stayed after seven elections by the year 1866. He won again against Pratt and, among other twice each against Thomas H. Seymour and Origen S. Seymour.

1868 William Buckingham was elected to represent Connecticut in the U.S. Senate, where he served from March 4, 1869 until his death in February 1875. In the Senate he was chairman of the Committee on engrossed bills; Furthermore, he was a member of the Committee on Investigation and Retrenchment and the Committee on Indian Affairs.
