William Backhouse Astor, Sr.

William Backhouse Astor ( born September 19, 1792 in New York City; † November 24, 1875 ) was the son and heir of John Jacob Astor.

Life

William was born in New York City and studied at Columbia University and the University of Göttingen. There he joined the Corps Curonia. He inherited the vast wealth of his father Johann Jacob Astor and his childless deceased uncle Henry Astor. That made ​​him the richest man in the United States at that time.
