William Beach Lawrence

William Beach Lawrence ( born October 23, 1800 New York City; † March 26, 1881 ) was an American lawyer and politician.

Life

Lawrence studied 1818 in Paris, settled in 1823 as a lawyer in his home, in 1826 went as secretary of legation to London, visited in 1828 again to Paris, where he François Barbé - Marbois ' Histoire de la Louisiane translated into English (Philadelphia 1830), and returned in 1832 in his native town back.

Here he held for several years at Columbia College Lectures on Political Economy ( printed 1834) and has published several historical treatises. Later he turned to social and international issues. He wrote among other things:

1850 Lawrence moved to Rhode Iceland, where he was elected the following year as Vice- Governor of the State; at times he also served as acting governor when he had represented incumbent Philip Allen. In 1852 he left office, after which he mainly worked as a writer of legal reference books. In 1873 he negotiated a case before the United States Supreme Court
