William Butterworth Bayley

William Butterworth Bayley (* November 3, 1781, † May 20 1860 in St Leonards- on-sea, Sussex ) was a British officer and interim March 13 to July 4 1828 Governor-General of Fort William in British India.

Bayley was born on November 3, 1781 and attended Eton College and Trinity College, University of Cambridge. In 1799 he attended the College of Fort William. He joined the Bengal Civil Service in the same year. Bayley worked among other things as a judge and was Chief Secretary to the Government in 1819. In 1825 he became a member of the Supreme Council. From 13 March to 4 July 1828, he acted as interim governor-general of India. July 23 1833 to 1854 he was director of the British East India Company.

In February 1809 he married in Calcutta Anne Augusta Jackson.

Bayley died on 20 May 1860 in St Leonards- on-sea.
