William C. Gibbs

William Channing Gibbs ( born February 10, 1789 in Newport, † February 24, 1871 ) was an American politician of the Democratic- Republican Party. From 1821 to 1824 he was governor of the state of Rhode Iceland.

Career

Gibbs was the son of George Gibbs and Mary Channing in Newport. He was a member of the Democratic- Republican Party and was 1816-1820 deputy in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. Then he was elected as a candidate of his party for the new governor of his state. After several re- elections he could hold that office between 2 May 1821 and 5 May 1824. During this time both a reform of the electoral law and an amendment to the state constitution was rejected by the citizens of the state. When he resigned in 1824 to run again, James Fenner was re-elected to this office. After his political career continued its Gibbs previously started career in the militia of the state continued. He brought it up to major general. William Gibbs died in February, 1871., With his wife Mary Kane he had ten children.
