William Chapman Nyaho

William H. Chapman Nyaho ( born December 28, 1958 in Washington, DC) is an American pianist of Ghanaian origin.

Life

Chapman Nyaho came at the age of a few months with his parents originating from Ghana in their home country. There he had piano lessons with John Barham and graduated from the Achimota School. He continued his education at Oxford University and at the Conservatory in Geneva and took lessons with Henri Gautier. In the Eastman School of Music in New York, he received his master's degree. Then he studied with David Renner at the University of Texas and received her doctorate degree. After four years as a Visiting Artist in North Carolina, he taught from 1991 to 2002 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He is a visiting professor at Colby College in Maine and at Willamette University in Oregon and are summer courses at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp and Adamant Music School.

As a pianist Chapman Nyaho occurred in the United States, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He played two CDs with works by composers of African descent an: Senku and Asa. In a duo with the pianist Susanna Garcia he took in 1998 an album of transcriptions for two pianos by Aaron Copland, 2001, the CD Variations on a Shaker Melody. Furthermore, Chapman Nyaho published the five-volume anthology Piano music of Africa and the African Diaspora.
