William Cullen (representative)

William Cullen ( born March 4, 1826 in County Donegal, Ireland, † January 17, 1914 in Ottawa, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1881 and 1885 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1832 William Cullen came with his parents from his Irish home to Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, where he later the public schools and the Allegheny Academy visited. In 1846 he moved to the Adams Township, LaSalle County, Illinois; there he worked in agriculture. In the years 1864 and 1864 he was sheriff of this county. Since 1865, Cullen was living in Ottawa, the county seat of LaSalle County. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1871 and 1887 he served as political editor of the newspaper Ottawa Republican.

In the congressional elections of 1880 Cullen was in the seventh election district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Philip C. Hayes on March 4, 1881. After a re-election in the eighth district of his state, he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1885 two legislative sessions. In 1884, he was not nominated by his party for re-election.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, William Cullen moved back into retirement. He died on January 17, 1914 in Ottawa, where he was also buried.
