William D. Coleman (politician)

William David Coleman (* 1842 in Fayette County, Kentucky, † 1908 in Clay Ashland, Liberia) was 1896-1900 President of Liberia.

He was born in Fayette County, Kentucky, and emigrated at the age of eleven years to Liberia. Coleman learned the trade of carpenter, but became a successful merchant, before he devoted himself to politics. To the Speaker of the House, he was elected in 1877. In 1879 he won the election for Senator of Montserrado County and held this office until he was elected in 1892 as Vice President of Joseph James Cheeseman. They were re-elected twice and Coleman took over the presidency as Cheeseman died in 1896.

William David Coleman was re-elected twice and made himself strong for the formation and review of the finances of the country. The Liberian college was reopened by him, he structured the needs of the Department and loosened the customs regulations after taking office. He advocated the promotion of natural resources, but felt the oppositional moods that arose against his advocacy and ultimately caused his resignation.

He remained active in politics and stood three more times on his election as President, but was always beaten by his opponents.

He died in his hometown of Clay - Ashland.
