William D. Williamson

William Durkee Williamson ( born July 31, 1779 Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, † May 27, 1846 in Bangor, Maine ) was an American politician and 1821, the second Governor of the State of Maine.

Early years

Williamson attended Williams College and Brown University. There, he graduated in 1804. After a subsequent law degree, he was admitted as a solicitor in 1807. Between 1811 and 1816 he was district attorney in Hancock County. From 1816 to 1820 he was a member of the Massachusetts Senate. After the founding of the state of Maine in 1820, he was elected to the Senate. There he was even President of the house. Williamson remained only until 5 December 1821 in his new office. During this time he has encouraged the industry in his state. The reason for his resignation was his election to the House of the United States. He remained there until 1823. Between 1824 and 1840, Williamson was on a probate judge in Penobscot County. William Williamson died on 27 May 1846 and was buried in Bangor.
