William Denison

Sir William Thomas Denison, KCB ( May 3, 1804 in London, England; † January 19, 1871 in East Sheen, (then part of Surrey, now part of the London Boroughs of Richmond upon Thames ) ) was a British governor.

Denison was born in London in 1804 as one of 14 children. He was from 1847 to 1855 Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen Land ( Tasmania ), and from 1855 to 1861 Governor of New South Wales. On January 22, 1860 he left Sydney to his office as governor of the province of Madras to compete. In November 1863, he had, after the death of Lord Elgin, held the office of Governor-General and Viceroy of India for two months. In March 1863 he returned to Britain.
