William Dobson

William Dobson (* March 4, 1610 in London, † before October 28, 1646 in Oxford) was an English painter.

Dobson was a pupil of Van Dyck, was a royal court painter, and later Chamberlain and died in 1646 in Oxford. After Dyck's death and the turmoil of the Civil War, he worked for several years for the King in Oxford worked.

He has led a lavish life, had even in the debtors' prison and died penniless.

His historical paintings and portraits are characterized by natural truth and loyalty as well as by strong drawing and well chosen, but sometimes raw color.
