William E. McVey

William Estus McVey ( born December 13, 1885 Clinton County, Ohio; † August 10, 1958 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1951 and 1958 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William McVey was born on a farm near the small town of Lee 's Creek in southwestern Ohio. He attended the common schools. Between 1908 and 1914 he was in the Philippines, which at that time belonged to the United States, Head of Division in the Ministry of Education. By 1916, he studied at Ohio University and then to 1919 at the University of Chicago. Between 1919 and 1947 he was head of two schools in Harvey (Illinois ). In the years 1943 and 1944 he also served as president of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In the years 1948 to 1950 he taught at DePaul University Education. He was also the author of several treatises.

Politically, McVey has been a member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1950, he was elected in the fourth electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded the Democrats V. James Buckley on January 3, 1951. After three re- elections he could remain until his death on August 10, 1958 at the Congress. In this time of the Korean War and the beginning of the civil rights movement fell. At the time of his death William McVey had already been nominated for a further re-election. He was buried in Galesburg.
