William Emerson Barrett

William Emerson Barrett ( born December 29, 1858 in Melrose, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, † February 12, 1906 in Newton, Massachusetts ) was an American politician. Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Barrett attended the public schools of his native land and from then until 1880, Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire). Then he started in Boston a long career in the newspaper business. He was owner and editor of several newspapers; among other things, he was among the founders of the Boston Evening Record. Moreover, he suggested, as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. Between 1887 and 1892 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Massachusetts and President of the Parliament chamber.

In the congressional elections of 1894 Barrett was in the seventh election district of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William Everett on March 4, 1895. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1899 two legislative sessions. In this time of the Spanish-American War was from 1898. In 1898 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Barrett returned to Boston to press again in the newspaper business. He was also president of the Union Trust Co. of Boston. William Barrett died on February 12, 1906 in Newton, where he was also buried.
