William Fermor

Wilhelm Graf von Fermor (Russian Виллим Виллимович Фермор, Willim Willimowitsch Fermor; * 28 Septemberjul / October 9 1702greg in Pskov, .. .. † 8 Februarjul / February 19 1771greg in Nītaure ) was a general of the Russian army from a original English family.

He entered 1720 in Russian military service, distinguished himself as a Major in the siege of Danzig, and in 1736 against the Turks, was established in January 1740 Commander of Vyborg and participated as such in all the events of the war in Finland share. In 1746, promoted to lieutenant general, he was also Chairman of the Baukanzlei and directed the construction of the Imperial Palace in St. Petersburg.

In 1751, the General Command him for Petersburg, Finland and the nowgorodische government was transferred; 1756, he served as General -in-chief of the main army under Apraxin a support corps, received in 1758 after the Battle of Great Jägerndorf the command of the Russian army, took Thorn and Elbing and was installed as Governor General of Prussia.

After the death of Empress Elisabeth ( 1762) released, he was appointed by Catherine II to the Governor General of Smolensk and member of the Senate, but retired in 1768 to his estate Nitau, where he died in 1771.
