William Gell

Sir William Gell FRS ( born April 1, 1777 Hopton Derbyshire, † February 4, 1836 in Naples) was a British archaeologist.

Life

William Gell was from an old established family in the English county of Derbyshire, during which returns to its origins to the year 1209 the reign of King John. After training at the school in Derby in 1793, he enrolled at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, where he earned degrees in 1804 a master. He traveled the Greek mainland and the Greek islands, where he undertook studies in Olympia and in the Temple of Apollo on the island of Aegina, and Asia Minor.

In 1814 he accompanied Princess Caroline as Chamberlain ( Chamberlain ) to Italy. In the same year he was appointed a Knight Bachelor. From 1820 until his death he lived in Rome, where he worked as a painter. He was a close friend of Keppel Richard Craven, traveled with him and bequeathed him Italy after his death all his personal property. In Naples he owned a second home, where he received guests such as Lady Blessington and Walter Scott.

Gell died in 1836 in Naples and was buried at the local English Cemetery. Although he was by its very nature dilettante, his topographical works have gained recognition. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries of London, and member of the Institut de France and the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences. His numerous drawings of classical ruins and sites, carried out with great care, are in the British Museum.
