William Godfrey

William Cardinal Godfrey ( born September 25, 1889 in Liverpool, United Kingdom; † January 22, 1963 in London ) was an Archbishop of Westminster.

William Godfrey was a seminarian at the Pontifical English College in Rome and was ordained priest on 28 October 1916. On November 21, 1938, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Titular Archbishop of Cius and apostolic delegate in the United Kingdom; Raffaele Cardinal Carlo Rossi gave him the episcopal ordination on 21 December of the same year. In 1943 he was charge d' affaires of the Polish government in exile in England. Later, from 1953 to 1956, he was Archbishop of Liverpool, and from 1956 to 1963 Archbishop of Westminster. Pope John XXIII. took him in 1958 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Nereo ed Achilleo in the College of Cardinals to. Godfrey attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council.
