William H. Bulkeley

William Henry Bulkeley ( born March 2, 1840 in East Haddam, Connecticut; † November 7, 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut ) was an American politician. Between 1881 and 1883 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Connecticut.

Career

William Bulkeley was the younger brother of Morgan Bulkeley (1837-1922), who was both governor of Connecticut and U.S. Senator for that State. The father of the brothers was a member of both houses of the Connecticut General Assembly. In 1847 the family moved to Hartford. William attended the local high school, but he left without a degree. He then worked as a store clerk in a dry goods business. In March 1857 he moved to Brooklyn in New York, where he worked in the same industry at the company H. P. Morgan & Co. Later he opened his own business. During the Civil War Bulkeley served in the army of the Union. In 1868 he returned to Hartford, where he founded the company Kellogg & Bulkeley Company, whose president he remained for many years. He was also Vice President of the Life Insurance Company Aetna Life Insurance Company.

Politically, he joined the Republican Party. For five years he was a member of the city council of Hartford, where for a year he held the chairmanship. He also sat in the local road construction committee. In 1880 Bulkeley was elected to the side of Hobart B. Bigelow for Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut. This post he held between 1881 and 1883. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1882, he ran unsuccessfully for the governorship. After that, he is no longer politically have appeared. He died on November 7, 1902 in Hartford.
