William H. Meyer (Colorado)

William H. Meyer ( born April 14, 1847 in Hanover, Kingdom of Hanover; † August 22, 1923 in Costilla County, Colorado ) was an American politician. Between 1883 and 1885 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Colorado.

Career

Around the year 1862 came William Meyer in the United States. He first lived in the states of Kentucky and Missouri as well as in the New Mexico Territory and worked as a rancher. Around 1865-1867, he settled in Costilla County. There he acquired a large land mass on which he ran cattle on a large scale. He soon became one of the cattle barons in his homeland. Meyer was also interested in politics. In the years 1870 and 1874 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Colorado Territory. Between 1867 and 1876 he was employed by the county and court administration of his homeland. In 1875 he participated in the Constituent Assembly of the future State of Colorado as a delegate. Politically, he joined the Republican Party. From 1877 to 1879 he sat in the Senate from Colorado.

In 1882, Meyer was elected to the side of James Benton Grant for Lieutenant Governor of Colorado. This post he held 1883-1885. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. Between 1899 and 1903, and again from 1907 to 1911 he was again a state senator. His main political objective was the improvement of education in his state. In 1889, he was curator of the State Normal School. He died on 22 August 1923.
