William H. Webster

William Hedgcock Webster ( born March 6, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American lawyer and former government official. He was from 1978 to 1987 and then director of the FBI from 1987 to 1991 director of the CIA. As director of the FBI under President Jimmy Carter, he was successful before against the New York Mafia.

After serving as a lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Second World War, he worked for a law firm in St. Louis, before he began a long and illustrious career in the civil service.

He was United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri from 1960 to 1961. Between 1964 and 1969 he was a member of the Missouri Board of Law Examiners on. In 1970 he was appointed federal judge for the Eastern District of Missouri; In 1973 he was promoted to Judge of the Federal Court of Appeals for the eighth circuit court. In 1978 he resigned from this position to become head of the FBI, and later the CIA. Since leaving public office he has been a lawyer in Washington, DC worked in the law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. There he specializes in arbitration and internal investigations.
