William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham

William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham KG (* 1510, † January 12, 1573 in Hampton Court Palace ) was an English Admiral and Noble.

William Howard was the son of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk, and his second wife Agnes Tilney born around 1510. He attended Trinity Hall College at the University of Cambridge.

As a younger son of the first noble family of the country Howard could indeed any of the titles and offices of his father ( the Duke of Norfolk, Earl of Arundel, Earl of Surrey etc. and Earl Marshal of England) inherit, but of course it was the way in high State offices open at the court of the Tudors. So he was, because he was interested in the Navy, finally in 1554 Lord High Admiral with the rank of Grand Admiral. Howard had then immediately with the suppression of the Wyatt conspiracy. Therefore, Queen Mary I raised him on March 11, 1554 in recognition of his services, probably because of his Catholic faith, because she was a Catholic, and the country was re-catholicize, the peer of the realm with the title of Baron Howard of Effingham, and made him in the same year a Knight of the Garter.

Also among the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I. Howard had still held important offices. So he held over a period of 15 years ( 1557-1572 ), the influential post of Lord Chamberlain of the Household. 1572/3 he was finally Lord Privy Seal.

William Howard of Effingham was married twice. With his first wife, who died early, he had a daughter with his second wife, four sons and five daughters, including his title heir, Charles. This was also Lord High Admiral and was raised in 1597 to the Earl of Nottingham. Howard will also have had an illegitimate daughter.
