William I, Landgrave of Lower Hesse

Wilhelm I of Hesse, " the Elder " (* July 4, 1466; † February 8, 1515 ) was Landgrave of Hesse Landgraviate.

Life

His parents were Louis Outspoken (1438-1471) and Matilda, daughter of Count Ludwig I of Württemberg. Wilhelm turned to early under the influence of his mother's religious interests. After his uncle and guardian, Henry III. had died of Upper Hesse in 1483, William took over the business of government itself in 1488, he married Anna of Brunswick ( 1460-1520 ), with whom he had five daughters. After a pilgrimage to Palestine Wilhelm 1491-1492 ill, probably from syphilis, and left because of the resulting mental illness on June 3, 1493 the government of his brother, Landgrave Wilhelm II, he retired to the castle Spangenberg, where he died in 1515.
