William I of Provence

William I called the Liberator (French: Guillaume le I. Libérateur ) ( † 993 ) was Count and later Margrave of Provence and as William II Count of Arles. He was the younger son of Count Boso II and Constance of Provence from the House of Buviniden.

Life

970 was William Count of Arles and Provence, 979 he assumed the title of Marquis of Provence, making him especially - called the head of the family - against his older brother Earl Rotbald II. Whether this an actual division of the country or a coalition government was connected is unknown.

He got his nickname because of his victories over the Saracens by which he liberated Provence from this threat, since the establishment of their base in Fraxinetum ( La Garde -Freinet ) was resistant. In the battle of Tour Tour 973 he drove out with the support of the counts from the Alps, the viscounts of Marseille and Fos -sur -Mer finally out of the country. He reorganized the land east of the Rhone, the King Conrad III. of Burgundy attributed to him and which he had taken from the Saracens. With royal assent controlled him and his descendants the Provencal Fiscus. He and the Bishop of Grenoble Isarn settled in the Dauphiné again to people. In Fréjus an Italian named Ugo Blavia 970 was used as a Count. Because of his achievements, he is referred to in Rodulfus Glabers chronicle as dux and in a document from the year 992 when Father patriae.

He endowed the Abbey of Cluny and retired towards the end of his life in a monastery back. He died in Avignon and was buried in the church of Saint- Croix in sarrians. His successor as margrave by his brother.

He married his first wife, Arsenda of Comminges, 984/986 then in a second marriage - against the will of the Pope - 984/86 Adelaide ( Blanche ) of Anjou († 1026), daughter of Fulk II, Count of Anjou, widow of Count Stephen ( Etienne ) of Gevaudan and divorced wife of King Louis V the Lazy from France.
