Biography

Guillaume II took over the rule in Bellême after the assassination of his brother Robert I. by Gauthier de Sordains (Robert had let the father and the brothers Gauthier, after he had taken prisoner in a battle hang ). His reputation was that of a cruel, merciless and tyrannical masters.

The historian William of Jumièges reported Guillaume had his first wife, with whom he was dissatisfied, can strangle by two robbers in front of the entire nation when she was on her way to church. Shortly thereafter, he joined a second marriage with Haberge de Beaumont, daughter of Raoul V. de Beaumont, Viscount of Maine. At the wedding it came to the act for which he is still known today: he had invited Guillaume Giroie, he hosted the lord of Montreuil- l'Argillé, Échauffour and Saint- Céneri several days before it arresting. Guillaume Talvas gave the order to mutilate his guest, and then set out on a hunt. Guillaume Giroie was then blinded before the assembled people of Alençon, his ears and nose were cut off and he was emasculated ( Guillaume Giroie survived the ordeal and went years later to the monastery ). The brothers Guillaume, Raoul, called le time Couronné, and Robert Guillaume then ravaged country and besieged him in his castle.

His own son from his first marriage, Arnoul, it was then succeeded to chase him out of the country, however, benefited Arnoul not long before he was strangled in the bed of his success - according to William of Jumièges on behalf of his father. The now following events are unclear. It seems that Guillaume had asked the Count of Anjou to help, which was also promised him. On the other hand, now revolted Alençon and Domfront against the duke, after William II of Normandy successfully struggled a campaign to subdue the rebels and regain control of the rule Bellême. Orderic Vitalis reported that the Montgomery family Guillaume brought back to power, and Roger II de Montgomery in return for the hand of his daughter - was Mabile de Bellême - and nunmehrigen sole heir. He seems, moreover, that Duke William has requested this marriage to restore calm on the southern border of Normandy and at the same time close to bind the area of his confidants Montgomery itself.
