William II of Provence

William II (c. 987; † before 30 May 1018), called the Pious (French: Guillaume le Pieux ), was Count of Provence. He succeeds his father William I, as this retired end 993 in a monastery shortly before his death. He did not follow as Margrave of Provence, since this title - the equivalent to that of a head of family - went to his uncle Rotbald II.

His mother was Adelaide of Anjou, daughter Fulkos II, Count of Anjou, or Arsenda of Comminges, daughter of Arnold, and the first wife of his father.

He was initially under regency until he came of age 999. To 1002 he married Gerberge of Burgundy, daughter of Otto William, Count of Burgundy and Ermentrude of Mâcon and Besançon.

1005 he took part in a meeting under the chairmanship of his mother, in the regulations for the monastery of Saint -Victor in Marseille have been established. 1018 rebelled against the Viscount of Fos its sovereignty. William died before 30 May of the same year, during the siege of the castle of the Viscount. He was buried in the Abbey Montmajour at Arles.
