William IV, Count of Toulouse

William IV (* 1040, † 1094 ) was Count of Toulouse, Margrave of Provence from 1060 to 1094, he succeeded his father Pons at his death.. His mother was Almodis de la Marche, who was abducted and married by Ramon Berenguer I, Count of Barcelona, when William was a child. He was married to Emma of Mortain, daughter of Count Robert of Mortain, with whom he had a daughter. In addition, he had with his half-sister Adélaide an illegitimate son, William -Jordan.

After two marriages and two sons, both of which did not survive, he was in the position of having no male heirs. In order not to leave his possession of a woman, married William in 1086 a daughter, aged twelve, Philippa of Sancho I, King of Aragon, which he endowed with such a large dowry that he could hope that she would have no claim to Toulouse.

Two years later, in 1088, Wilhelm solved his problem of succession in an unconventional way. He announced to move to the Holy Land and his brother Raymond of Saint- Gilles to reign entrusting the country, making it clear that he would not go back. When he died six years later, his brother was able to have the power to take over permanently, while his daughter, whose husband was involved in battles with the Moors, could only protest.
