William IV, Lord of Egmont

William II of Egmond (* January 26, 1412; † January 19, 1483 in Grave ) from the House of Egmond Egmond was Mr, Ijsselstein, Leerdam, Schoonderwoerd and Haastrecht and governor of Gelderland.

Life

Between 1458 and 1464 he traveled with his older brother Arnold of Egmond, Duke of Gelre, the Holy Land. In the following years he supported Arnold in succession dispute with his son Adolf of Egmond. When, after Arnold's death and its conquest Geldern Charles the Bold, Duke of Geldern in 1473, was appointed him the governor of Gelderland. 1477 took him to Mary of Burgundy in the Great Council of Malines. In 1478 he became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

Family

He was the son of John II of Egmond and Maria van Arkel. His older brother was Arnold of Egmond.

On January 22, 1437 he married Walburga von Moers († 1459 ), daughter of Count Friedrich von Moers and Engelberta of Cleves. From this marriage produced four daughters and three sons:

  • Johann III. of Egmond ( 1438-1516 ).
  • Friedrich von Egmond, Count of Buren.
  • Wilhelm von Egmond the Younger, governor of Gelderland.
  • Anna of Egmond (1440-1462), married on August 14, 1459 Bernard van Bentheim ( 1435-1476 ), Count of Bentheim.
  • Elisabeth ( † 1539), married to Giisbrecht van Bronckhorst ( 1440-1489 ).
  • Walburga von Egmond, Nun.
  • Margeretha, married to Jan van Merode.

In addition, William had four illegitimate children:

  • Nicolas von Egmond.
  • Hendrik von Egmond ( † before 1511).
  • Frederik of Egmond.
  • Hendrika of Egmond, married to Willem van Tuyl van Bulckesteijn († 1449 ).
