William IX, Marquess of Montferrat

Wilhelm XI. Palaiologos (. Guglielmo XI del Monferrato, * August 10, 1486; † October 4, 1518 in Trino ) was Margrave of Montferrat. He was the son of Margrave Boniface III. (1424-1494) and his wife Mary Brankovic (1466-1495), and came to his father in 1494 the inheritance.

He kept his father's pro-French policy with, and married on August 31, 1508 in the Church of Saint- Sauveur in Blois Anne d' Alençon ( 1492-1562 ), daughter of René, Duke of Alençon, and Margaret of Lorraine Vaudémont.

After the battle of Novara ( 1513) Wilhelm covered the withdrawal of the French army from Milan. Duke Massimiliano Sforza returned to his office and obtained by Wilhelm payment of 30,000 scudi against the waiver of reprisals. The contracts were not honored by Massimiliano, who invaded with his army in Montferrat and numerous cities pillaged. Based on the information that at the same time a distant relative, Marquis Oddone Incisa, make himself Marquis of Montferrat wanted, occupied Wilhelm in 1514 his residence Incisa, annexed the Margraviate and let Oddone and his son Badone condemn to death. This in turn led to a violent reaction of the emperor as overlord Incisas, who now demanded the abandonment of the annexation and the submission to the applicable law of William. However, Wilhelm had the do not bend in the face of the ensuing bureaucratic entanglements.
