William L. Marcy

William Learned Marcy ( born December 12, 1786 in Southbridge, Massachusetts, † July 4, 1857 in Ballston Spa, New York ) was an American politician, Senator and Secretary of State.

Marcy went to Newport, Rhode Iceland, to school and studied law at Brown University in Providence. After qualifying in 1811, he worked in Troy, New York in 1812 and served in the war. After a few years of belonging to the different political parties Marcy 1831 belonged until 1833 to the U.S. Senate for New York and was then Governor of the State of New York. From 1845 to 1849 he was a member of the cabinet of President James K. Polk, who made him Minister of War during his tenure. After that, he was Secretary of State under President Franklin Pierce as the successor to Edward Everett in the period from March 7, 1853 to March 6, 1857. His successor as foreign minister was Lewis Cass.
