William Lawrence Scott

William Lawrence Scott ( born July 2, 1828 in Washington, DC; † September 19, 1891 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician.

Scott moved in 1846 to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he was engaged in various occupations. 1866 and a second time in 1871, he held the office of mayor of Erie. 1884 Scott was elected as a Democrat in Congress. Previously, he had in 1866 and 1876 unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served on the U.S. House of Representatives on 4 March 1885 to 3 March 1889. During this time he brought the Scott Act.

1888 and 1890 he was nominated by his party, in each case as a candidate for the congressional election, but decided not both times for health reasons from. Within his party, he was from 1876 to 1888 a member of the Democratic National Committee and belonged to the Democratic National Convention in 1876, 1880 and 1888 as a delegate. Scott died in 1891 in Newport, Rhode Iceland and was buried in Erie Cemetery in Erie. At the time of his death he was president of the Erie & Pittsburgh Railroad.

William Lawrence Scott was the grandson of Gustavus Scott.
