William Lewis (Kentucky politician)

William Lewis ( born September 22, 1868 in Cutshin, Leslie County, Kentucky; † August 8, 1959 in London, Kentucky ) was an American politician. Between 1948 and 1949 he represented the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Lewis grew up on a farm. He attended the common schools and the Laurel County Seminary. He then studied at the University of Kentucky in Lexington and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor Jura. In the years 1891 and 1892 he was sheriff in Leslie County. In the same district, he served from 1894 to 1898 as a school board. Politically, Lewis was a member of the Republican Party. In the years 1900 and 1901 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Kentucky. In the years 1904-1909 he worked as a prosecutor. After that, he was 1909-1922 and again from 1928 to 1934 Judge in the 27th Judicial District of the State of.

In the following years, Lewis practiced as a private attorney. After the death of Rep. John M. Robsion he was in the overdue election for the ninth seat of Kentucky as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. He resigned on April 24, 1948 at the age of 79 years to his new mandate. Until January 3, 1949, he finished the opened term of his predecessor. In the regular congressional elections of 1948, Lewis opted not to run again. He died on August 8, 1959 at the age of 90 years.
