William Lyon (film editor)

William A. Lyon ( born January 21, 1903 in Texas; † March 18, 1974 in Los Angeles ) was an American editor.

Life

William A. Lyon was taken in 1935 by Columbia Pictures as an editor under contract and cut in the following years, initially numerous B- movies. In the 1940s, he slowly worked his way up and has participated in movies of different genres, such as the movie musical you were never bewitching ( You Were Never Lovelier, 1942) with Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth, the war film The Caine it was destiny ( the Caine Mutiny, 1954) with Humphrey Bogart, when Western the Man from Laramie ( the Man from Laramie, 1955) with James Stewart or the romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park ( Barefoot in the Park, 1967) with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford.

Throughout his career he was six times nominated for the Academy Award for Best Editing. In 1954 he received the trophy for Fred Zinnemann's war drama From Here to Eternity ( From Here to Eternity, 1953). In 1956, he won the Academy Award a second time along with Charles Nelson for the movie Picnic ( Picnic, 1955 ), in which William Holden and Kim Novak played the lead roles. In 1971, William A. Lyon retired from the film business.
