William McManus

William Telemachus McManus (* 1780 in Brunswick, New York, † January 18, 1835 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1825 and 1827 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Telemachus McManus was born during the War of Independence in Brunswick and grew up there. He received an academic education. Then he studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1817 and then began to practice in Troy. Between 1815 and 1818, he worked as a guardianship and estate Richter ( surrogate ) in Rensselaer County and 1818-1821 as District Attorney. Politically, he was a member of the Adams Group.

In the congressional elections of 1824 for the 19th Congress McManus was in the ninth constituency of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James L. Hogeboom on March 4, 1825. Since he gave up for reelection in 1826, he retired after March 3, 1827 from the Congress.

After his conference time he went back his activity after as a lawyer. He was active in 1832 as ground speculator. In this regard, he was a co-founder of the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. In 1833, he went along with his son Robert and his daughter Jane and a group of German settlers to Texas, which was still part of Mexico. The project failed when the German settlers refused to go on to Matagorda. He then returned in 1834 with his daughter back to Brunswick, where he soon after died on 18 January 1835. His son Robert remained in Texas and was a wealthy planter.

Family

William Telemachus McManus was the son of Mary (1751-1834) and Hugh McManus ( 1747-1826 ). He married on February 24, 1805 Catharina Wheeler Coons ( 1784-1839 ), daughter of Elizabeth Wheeler and Philip Coons, in Greenbush (New York). The couple had four children together:
