William Moore (statesman)

William Moore ( * 1735 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † July 24, 1793 ) was an American politician. Between 1781 and 1782, he was President of Pennsylvania.

The exact date of birth and place of death of William Moore are unknown. He was born around 1735 in what was then British Philadelphia and was like his father a successful trader. In 1765 he joined the protest against the British Stamp Act. Nevertheless, he was what the relationship with the mother country England was concerned, by far not as radical as some of his contemporaries. In 1776 he was elected to the Security Council of Pennsylvania, in 1778 followed by his election to the Continental Congress. But he has rejected this mandate. Instead, he was a member of the Executive Council of Pennsylvania.

In 1779, he became Vice President of Pennsylvania. This office was approximately that of the later vice- governor. Moore has held this position between November 11, 1779 November 14, 1781. Subsequently, he was himself elected president. He exercised this mandate between November 15, 1781 to November 7, 1782. His new office corresponded to the later -created Office of the Governor of Pennsylvania.

After the end of his one-year tenure Judge Moore was at a Court of Appeal. In 1784, he was also a member of the National Assembly of Pennsylvania. In the same year he became director of the Bank of Pennsylvania. He was also from 1784 to 1789 curator of the University of Pennsylvania. He died on 24 July 1793.
