William Mudford

William Mudford (* January 8, 1782 in London, † March 10, 1848 in London) was a British essayist and journalist. His short story The Iron Shroud is a role model for Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum.

Mudford was the son of a small businessman in Piccadilly, London. He worked early on as a journalist for magazines such as Blackwood's and Fraser 's Magazine. He earned a remarkable self-taught education, however, was the formal classical education rather critical. Politically Mudfod live long on the side of the Tories. His great opponents and detractors was William Hazlitt.

Troz a major financial setback from failed stock speculation he ended his life in prosperity as the owner of the Kentish Observer in Canterbury and chief editor of John Bull Magazine.
