William Nicholson (writer)

William Nicholson ( born January 12, 1948 in Tunbridge Wells, England ) is an author, screenwriter and director. For the screenplay for the film Gladiator in 2000, he was nominated for an Oscar.

Life

Nicholson, who grew up in a Catholic family, met at the age of ten years, the decision to become a writer. He studied English at Cambridge University. Nicholson first worked for the BBC on documentaries. Later he wrote the award-winning trilogy Wind On Fire. For The Wind Singer ( see Aramanth ) won the 2000 Nestlé Smarties Book Prize.

For the plays Shadowlands and The Retreat from Moscow he was nominated for the prestigious award Tony Award. In 1993 the play Shadowlands with Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger was filmed; the director was Richard Attenborough.

Nicholson wrote several screenplays, among others, for the films Martin Luther, Heretic, The march, Nell, Gladiator and Firelight. In the latter, he also took over as director.
