William of Modena

William of Modena, also William of Sabina, († March 31, 1251 in Lyon) was in 1224 by the Pope Legate for Livonia, Prussia, Holstein, Estonia, Semgallen, Sambia, Courland ( Kurzeme ), Wierland, Guland ( Oeland? ), Bornholm, Ruegen and Gotland appointed. He was Bishop of Modena in 1221 and 1244, Cardinal Bishop of Sabina.

In 1243 the papal legate William of Modena divided the country into four dioceses of Prussia a: Kulmerland, Pomesania, Warmia and Sambia. The four dioceses were under from 1255 to the Archbishop of Riga.

1247 Wilhelm traveled to Norway, where he attended the coronation of King Håkon Håkonsson, and Sweden, where the first steps toward legal separation of the church were initiated by the public in the church meetings of Skänninge 1248 and canon law in Sweden has been introduced.

William of Modena died on March 31, 1251 in Lyon.
