William of Savoy

William of Savoy (c. 1201; † November 1, 1239 ) was from 1224 Bishop of Valence and from 1238 until his death bishop of Liege.

Life

William was the son of Count Thomas I of Savoy and Beatrice of Geneva. He was Dean of Vienne in 1224 and was elected as Bishop of Valence. In 1235 he was elec from Lyon, but was not confirmed by the Pope. 1237 he went to England at the court of Henry III. , Who was married to his niece Eleanor. Heinrich tried him the bishopric of Winchester to procure, but failed because of the resistance of the local clergy. In 1238 he was elected bishop of Liege. He traveled to Brescia by the Emperor Frederick II, who, however, refused to grant him the regalia. Thereupon, Wilhelm went to Rome to Pope Gregory IX. , Who confirmed him as Bishop of Liege. On the way back he died in Viterbo, probably he was poisoned. William was buried in the Abbey of Hautecombe.
