William Paine Sheffield, Sr.

William Paine Sheffield (* August 30 1820 in New Shoreham, Washington County, Rhode Iceland, † June 2, 1907 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in both chambers of Congress.

Born to block Iceland William Sheffield first attended a private preparatory school in Kingston, and then Harvard University, where in 1843 he earned his law degree. The following year he was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Newport. Sheffield took in 1841 and 1842 respectively participate in the Constitutional Convention of his State. Between 1842 and 1845 he sat for the first time in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland; further terms of office in this chamber of parliament joined 1849-1853 and from 1857 until 1861. In the meantime, he lived in Tiverton; later he returned to Newport.

During the Civil War, Sheffield joined the National Union Party, which U.S. President Abraham Lincoln as a common electoral platform from Republicans and Democrats loyal to the Union served. As a Unionist, he was elected to the House of Representatives of the United States, where he remained from 4 March 1861 until 3 March 1863. He then worked again as a lawyer. 1871 Sheffield was appointed to a commission to revise the laws of Rhode Iceland; 1875-1884 he was again deputy in the House of Representatives of his State. Finally, on November 19, 1884 he was appointed U.S. senator as successor to the late Henry B. Anthony. Sheffield, meanwhile, Republicans, exercised this mandate from until 20 January 1885, then returned to his office to Rhode Iceland back.

Sheffield died in 1907 in Newport. His 1857 -born son, who was also named William Paine Sheffield, sat from 1909 to 1911 also for Rhode Iceland in the U.S. House of Representatives.
