William Painter (inventor)

William Painter (* November 20, 1838 Ireland, † July 15, 1906 Baltimore) was the inventor of the crown cap and founder of the " Crown Holdings, Inc."

William Painter was born in Ireland and emigrated in 1858 to the United States. His residence he was in Baltimore, Maryland.

In addition to the bottle caps (1892 ) he invented bottle opener, a machine to seal bottles, a paper folding machine, a coin acceptor and an ejection seat for passenger trains. Overall, he was over 80 patents.

In April 1893 Painter founded the company " Crown Holdings Inc", now one of the largest manufacturers of bottle caps and other beverage products.

On July 15, 1906 William Painter died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore of pneumonia.
