William Phipps Blake

William Phipps Blake ( * 1826 in New York City; † May 22, 1910 in Berkeley ) was an American geologist and mineralogist.

Life

William Phipps Blake finished 1852, the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University, a year later worked as a mineralogist and geologist for the " Pacific Railroad Exploring Expedition" and was responsible as the author of numerous reports. In 1851 he described a newly discovered mineral, the clinochlore.

From 1859 to 1860 was editor of Mining Magazine Blake and 1862 worked as a mining engineer for the Japanese government. In 1863 he was appointed professor of mineralogy at the College of California, as well as a geologist for the California " Authority for Agricultural Economics ." From 1896 to 1905 he was professor of geology and director of the School of Mines at the University of Arizona.

On May 22, 1910, he died in Berkeley (California ) from pneumonia.

Honors

In his honor, was named a 1944 newly discovered mineral Blakeit.
