William R. Cotter (politician)

William Ross Cotter ( born July 18, 1926 in Hartford, Connecticut, † September 8, 1981 in East Lyme, Connecticut ) was an American politician. Between 1971 and 1981 he represented the first electoral district of the state of Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Cotter attended the public schools in Hartford and then to 1949 the local Trinity College. He then began a career in politics. He became a member of the Democratic Party and in 1953 sat on the city council of Hartford. From 1955 to 1957 he was part of the senior staff of Governor Abraham A. Ribicoff. Between 1957 and 1964 he was deputy and 1964-1970 actual Insurance Commissioner ( Insurance Commissioner ) of the State of Connecticut. Between 1954 and 1970 he was a delegate at all regional party conferences of the Democrats in his home state. In the years 1964 and 1968, he also participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions relevant.

In the congressional elections of 1970, William Cotter was the first district of Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he entered on January 3, 1971, to succeed Emilio Q. Daddario. After five elections he could implement his mandate in Congress until his death on September 8, 1981.
